If you dream of waist-length locks but don’t have the genes, hair extensions may be your best solution.

This quick and pricey fix isn’t always simple when there are over six methods to choose from, each of which is suited to different hair types.

You might sway towards the cheapest option and think of it as a one size fits all kind of thing, but Rachel Lann, founder of Angel Hair Extensions, says this isn't the case.

"Choosing the wrong method will mainly mean that the hair won’t blend effectively with the client’s own hair. Different methods of hair extensions are suitable for different hair types and it’s very important that the client comes in for a consultation and has the correct method for their hair.”

Hair Extensions

The main methods are micro rings, nano rings, keratin pre-bonded, LA weave and tape extensions.

Here's what you should choose based on your hair type:

For thin hair:

Rachel advises that clients with hair on the thinner side should stick to either nano rings, pre-bonded or tape extensions. Nano rings are 90% smaller than their sister, the micro ring, meaning they’re less visible when the client doesn’t have as much volume to hide the bonds.

For thick hair

If you have thick hair, be prepared to splash out a bit more as you'll need more extensions to ensure a seamless blend. Micro rings or tape methods are advised.

To ensure your extensions live a long and happy life, take note of these aftercare tips advised by Lann. Not only will they keep your new locks looking healthy – they could also save you money on unnecessary maintenance corrections.

1. Don’t go to bed with wet hair

Sleeping with damp or wet extensions will lead to matted and tangled hair, eventually resulting in frequent maintenance to separate the bonds.

2. Wash your hair upright in the shower

Instead of leaning over the bath, stand up in the shower to allow the water to run through the hair.

3. Never condition your roots

To avoid your extensions becoming loose and slipping out, stick to applying conditioner on the mid-length to the ends of the hair.

4. Choose your products wisely

Oily hair products which contain wheat protein, silicone or hydrolysed silk can cause extensions to fall out, prematurely which is why it’s essential to use the correct aftercare products. We recommend NYK1 Duo Shampoo and Conditioner (£35).
